Embossed / Debossed

Embossing (raised above the surface) and debossing (sunk into the surface) are often confused but we will help you out if you are unsure. Can be combined with foil or “blind” to create the design simply through indentation on the paper. In the white example above, the little logo is embossed and the rectangle around it was debossed. Typically requires a longer run to be commercially viable – at least 100 copies. You can see examples of embossing and debossing here.

Blind Deboss

Blind Deboss

A subtle finishing technique that presses a design into the surface without ink or foil, creating a recessed texture for a refined, understated effect.

Deboss combined with Foil

Deboss combined with Foil

A premium finishing technique that combines recessed debossed detail with metallic foil, creating depth, contrast, and a striking high-end tactile effect.

Practical buying information

Debossing works particularly well on business cards, invitations, presentation folders, packaging, book covers, swing tags, labels and premium stationery. The depth and clarity of the finished impression will depend on the artwork, material, size of the debossed area and pressure used during production.

If the choice of stock or depth of impression is central to the project, speak to the team about samples or proofing options. Freestyle Print can also advise whether debossing should be combined with foiling, die cutting, duplexing, triplexing or another specialist finish.

Debossing presses a design into the surface of the material, creating a recessed impression that can be seen and felt. It can give logos, lettering and selected design details a more considered appearance.

Choose blind debossing for a subtle finish that relies on depth and shadow, or combine the recessed impression with foil to introduce colour, contrast or a metallic detail.

Debossing can be applied to a wide choice of papers and boards, including coloured, textured and premium stocks. Freestyle Print can advise on a material that will hold the impression clearly while remaining suitable for the product and print specification.

Debossed printing is available for one-off specialist projects, commercial print runs and repeat requirements. Once a specification has been agreed, it can support consistent production across future orders and related branded materials.
