The variation in softcovers we offer is hugely varied – from Colorplan coloured card covers through to Kraft covers and into all sorts of other specialist papers. If you have an idea for your books and are not sure if it can be done, ask us. We often duplex softcovers to thicken them and make them a half way house between soft and hard covers. Practical buying information & Applications
Buying Information
Soft touch films can vary in appearance, texture and resistance to marking. If the precise feel or colour reproduction is important, ask about suitable material samples before production.
Foil, Spot UV and other finishes applied over the laminate must be considered as part of the full production process. Supplying these details at the quotation stage will help Freestyle Print recommend a suitable combination of stock, laminate and finishing methods.
Soft touch printing creates a smooth, velvety surface that can make printed materials feel more refined. It works particularly well where the way a product feels is an important part of its presentation.
The laminate can be applied to packaging, book and brochure covers, business cards, presentation folders, invitations and other branded materials, subject to the chosen stock and construction.
As well as changing the feel and appearance of the material, soft touch lamination can help protect printed surfaces from scuffs and frequent handling. The level of protection will depend on the film, stock and intended use.
Soft touch lamination can be combined with finishes such as foil or Spot UV to create contrast between the smooth background and highlighted design details. These combinations should be planned together at the quotation and artwork stages.

FAQs
Soft touch lamination involves applying a specialist film to the surface of printed material. It creates a smooth, velvety feel and can provide additional protection against handling and scuffing.
It is commonly used on packaging, book and brochure covers, business cards, presentation folders, invitations and other premium printed materials. Suitability will depend on the stock and product construction.
Yes, depending on the product and chosen material. Some items only need the outward-facing surface laminated, while others may benefit from lamination on both sides.
Selected foils and Spot UV finishes can be applied over compatible soft touch laminates. The complete finishing specification should be confirmed before production because the materials and processes need to work together.
The quotation will depend on the finished size, quantity, material, number of laminated sides and any additional finishing requirements. Providing a complete specification will help the team prepare an accurate price.
